“The Power of Knowledge” is painted on the side of a classroom at Hayward Community School

Hayward Community School

Hayward Community School is designed to provide educational opportunities for expelled middle and high school students, ages 12-17, referred from their local districts whose behavior prevents them from being successful in traditional school settings in Alameda County. Enrollment is for one semester to a calendar year and may be extended. The program is a joint venture among ACOE and school districts of Alameda County. Courses offered include English, Math, Social Science, Science, Health, Life Skills, and Physical Education. The program provides classroom instruction that allows individualized attention, ongoing student assessment, and program evaluation, and provides group and individual counseling and mental health services. Referral to the program is through the school district of residence or the Probation Department.

The staff provide structured discipline and real life skills in an environment for seventh through twelfth grade students that is safe, motivating, cooperative, positive and collaborative.

Philosophy for Success

Students receive substantial individual help through a joint effort with district counselors, support staff, transition connections, mentors, grief counselors, and psychologists as well as outside agencies that work with youth such as ACOE, law enforcement, school resource officers, probation, and human services.

It is the commitment of the Hayward Community School to make every effort to overcome all obstacles that prevent at-risk students from receiving a full and meaningful education. All students are treated as individuals. Because all students learn in different ways, a variety of instructional strategies are used to ensure maximum opportunities for success. We value all students. The purpose of this school is to move students toward grade level competencies while giving them the tools to be successful when they return to their local district schools.  Our goal is to help all students reach their full potential and become lifelong learners through instruction and example.
