JOAQUÍN RIVERA has represented Area 1 on the Alameda County Board of Education since July 2010. Rivera brings to the Board a strong record of dedication and advocacy for public education, its students and teachers. Since 1990 he has taught chemistry at Skyline College in San Bruno. He has served as President and Chief Negotiator for the San Mateo Community College Federation of Teachers, President of the Academic Senate, and Vice President of the California Federation of Teachers. In 1996, he was elected to the Berkeley School Board.
Rivera has served two terms as President of the Alameda County Board of Education. In 2016 he was President of the California County Boards of Education (CCBE). Since 2018 he has been on the Board of Directors of the California School Boards Association as the Director at Large Hispanic. He also serves on the CCBE Board of Directors and on the Board of Directors of the California Latino School Boards Association.
During his 12 year tenure on the Berkeley School Board, Rivera distinguished himself in the areas of academic quality, student achievement, and fiscal responsibility. He was president of the Board for three terms and was elected by the other school board members in Alameda County to represent them in the California School Boards Association (CSBA) delegate assembly. He holds a Masters in Governance from CSBA. He also served on many CSBA committees including the Policy Platform, Nominating, and Legislative committees.
Rivera graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez with a B.S. degree in Chemistry. He obtained a Masters Degree in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley. He is committed to ensuring students’ success by providing quality health and educational programs based on rigorous standards and high expectations in a safe environment.
