There are many interpretations of what it means to lead with a Social Justice lens in math education. Participants in this Community of Practice will engage in a year-long inquiry cycle to investigate and conduct action research in how to make our practices result in improved outcomes for Alameda County’s most under-served mathematics students. This is a year-long inquiry-based cycle of workshops for Social Justice math educators. From equity-based pedagogical practices, to lessons that integrate social and economic justice issues, to addressing stereotype threat and microaggressions, Social Justice math educators are provided a space to explore, implement, and refine their work.
Sites and districts are encouraged to register as teams, to support the inquiry process and a sustained implementation of strategies and approaches discussed during our sessions. Participants are expected to attend all sessions, as the action research and continuous community of practice are essential elements of the professional learning process. Meeting locations may rotate on occasion to allow for access to different classrooms (TBD in our sessions).
Sign-in begins 30 minutes before start of session. Light refreshments will be served at each session.
Testimonials from previous participants:
- "This turned out to be one of the highlights of my year."
- "...my primary takeaway was the practice of asking [...] the ways in which I include equity for "sub-populations" in my lessons, and the way that Maths are a lane changer - fast or slow. And how far students go in Math helps determine the options and availability of choices for them."
- "Actual hands on math problems [on social justice issues related to wealth distribution] today with Stanford presenter was incredible and FUN."
- "I learned that the discipline of mathematics is NOT void of bias, cultural relevance, and opportunities to break down barriers."
Cost: $125/person for the year.
